Steps to reproduce the issue:
1) Write some notes
2) Select a range, press 's' (→ that range is slurred)
3) Press 's' again
* expected behavior: the slur disappears (consistent, for example, with the alt+s shortcut, which toggles on/off the staccatto articulation)
* actual behavior: another slur is created on top of the new one.

I think it should actually place another slur on the opposite side of the staff as the old one.

A same slur that appears both upwards and downwards? Where have you seen that?
Look at the horn parts in this score: https://bandmusicpdf.com/bmpdf/F/FolkSongSuite-sc.pdf

I see... That's condensing in action. It's actually two separate voices (corresponding two different instruments) with the beam oriented towards the same side.
Let me rephrase my request then: 's' keyboard shortcut should toggle a slur off if it's spanning exactly the selected range in a concrete voice
[edit:] That Vaughan Williams is great :) I played it at school band and enjoyed it a lot
