Timpani Rolls

I am wondering how I can create a nice, clean, timpani roll, like you would hear in a concert. I used a roll on a timpani whole note and sounded terrible. How can I fix this?

I just tried timpani rolls in MS 4.1 and they're "pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good" (Larry David: "Curb Your Enthusiasm"). Make sure you use a tremolo with maximum slashes (4).
