copying notes w/o lyrics
Hi, gang
Long time - yada yada...
I thought I had this figured out!
The second [phrase] of the song I'm notating has mostly the same notes/chords as the first. so I copied the notes from the first passage to the second, and noticed it copied the lyrics also --Oops --
After de-selecting Lyrics in the Selection Filter, I tried it again, but when I do this it deletes (overwrites?) the lyrics in the second passage! (You might say "Put the lyrics in later," but I needed them in there in order to keep track of where I was in the song.)
Not doing repeats for a couple of reasons --
I'm thinking the best solution is to just re-enter the lyrics from a text file; so, unless there's a 'quick fix' for this, that would beat any alternatives.
Thoughts, pls ?

Lyrics are attached to notes, so if you paste over the note with a new one, then the lyrics (and the articulations and all other note-attached markings) from the old note will indeed vanish.
I'd just copy the lyrics along. If you're going to overwrite them, then just double click the first lyric and start typing over them. If you want to remove them, click the first, Shift+click the last to range-select them; then press "delete".

Okay -
I'm having a problem with something else, but I guess I should start a new thread for that.
Thanks for replying
I'm confused - do you want the lyrics in the second passage or not? If you do, you had them the first time, why mess with the filter? If you don't, then it sounds to me that copying the with the filter did exactly what you wanted?

The lyrics are different in the second passage, so I don't want the same ones.
Is this what you meant?

I'm not sure what I mean, except that I'm still confused. Neither the first result (lyrics copied) nor second result (lyrics not copied) is what you want? Hmm, maybe you're saying you tried the second thing after entering the new lyrics, so what you want is to keep the new lyrics but replace the notes?

Okay, I'll try using examples:
Let's say the first lyrics are "Once upon a time" and the Second passage lyrics are "And the second thing--" -
If I copy (all) from the first to the second, then the second passage lyrics are now "Once upon a time."
If I copy (w/o lyrics) I expect the second passage lyrics to remain unchanged -- but they disappear!
(I only want to copy the notes; the lyrics are different - Not repeated)

Yes, keep new lyrics, replace notes

So, you first entered the wrong notes but right lyrics, now you want to fix the notes by copying in the right notes from elsewhere, which keeping the lyrics?
Probably not a way to fix that directly through copy/paste that way. But assuming the rhythms all do match up, you can fix it the other way around. First copy the second passage - notes and lyrics - somewhere else for safekeeping. Then copy passage 1 to 2. Then delete the lyrics from 2. Then copy just the lyrics from the safe copy of 2 back to the actual version.
Or if the passage is short, just use repitch mode to fix the wrong notes instead of copy/paste.

Did Not enter wrong notes; notes/chords in second passage are mostly the same as the first, that's why I tried copying instead of Re-pitch.
Your "safe copy" idea might be worth a try, though -- Thanks for the input.

Sorry, I'm still hopelessly confused. You have lyrics with no notes at all? did you enter them on rests? I still don't understand how you got the new lyrics in without getting the notes in - how you got yourself into a state where you liked the lyrics you had but felt the need to replace the notes via copy and paste.
As always, attaching an actual score helps immensely.

As I recall, I'm pretty sure I put them in with Rhythm mode.

Ah, that begins to make sense. In which case, it seems like they are the wrong notes - probably they are all B (if treble clef). If they were already the right notes, you wouldn't be needing to do the copy / paste :-)
So, an interesting possibility for a new command, a sort of "mass repitch" that replaces pitches from one passage with those from another, but keeping everything else intact. I could see such a command being built in someday, but meanwhile, probably a plugin could be written to do that.

Well, if they are mostly the same, consider using re-pitch on only those notes (in the second passage) that should be different.

Assuming that I did use Rhythm mode in second passage, the notes are Not the same until I copy them over.

So, Marc -
How would the "mass re-pitch" be different from copying - the lyrics would not be affected?
Sounds like a good idea - what's the likelihood of that plug-in being done?
In reply to So, Marc - How would the … by gldodge
Not just lyrics - I'd imagine it could also preserve existing articulations and note settings,. Maybe even durations, so literally only pitches were affected.
As for likelihood of someone volunteering to write such a plugin, I guess that depends on whether it sounds like a good to idea to anyone with the necessary skills and free time! Given there is a pretty simple solution to this already that I already described, and I don't recall this having come up before, I'm not thinking it's something a ton of people would find that useful, but you never know. Al it takes is one, if it's someone with that right combination of skills and time!
