Issue with importing MIDI files

• Jun 28, 2021 - 16:10

Hi guys,
I am a beginner pianist and wanted to record a song from my piano and make a sheet music from it. (In case you wonder, my computer is in a different room so I had to record the MIDI file on my cell phone.)

I am having trouble with the MIDI import, whatever settings I try:
- It doesn't detect the pick-up measure
- It doesn't detect the speed correctly
- It places some notes in the wrong staff (left and right hand). The handbook says this can be configured via sub-options, but I couldn't find them.

I attached the file - I would be grateful if an expert could try to import it and tell me, if I set anything incorrectly (of if this is simply a shortcoming of MuseScore).

I am using the most recent version of MuseScore:
OS: Windows 10 (10.0), Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.6.2.548021803, revision: 3224f34

Thanks in advance!
Christian

Your MIDI file has the first note about the downbeat of measure 2, probably a beat later than you want it. My software (Cakewalk) sees the tempo as 120.00.

There's partial light on two of your questions, anyway ;)

Hi Christian.

A lot depends on how you initially created the sequence. Some decisions, conscious or not, can be hard to unravel.

Once imported into Musescore I copied all the notes but the initial one, and pasted it on Measure 2 beat 1. Then it took considerable work to separate the voices and notes in wrong staves. I didn't finish the job, nor is it perfect, but it can be done. Main problem is that I got a mix of User and Offset velocities. So watch out for that.

If you record it in real time, in one pass, you might have been able to set a split point for the staves.

But bear in mind, ideal as it would be, attempting to create a piano score from a real-time performance can be tricky indeed.
