Unable to add cello part to new piano-cello duet score
I have input the piano part to my new score but am unable to add the cello part. Cello is not listed in the line-up of default group and solo settings, and when I click on the curser at "add instruments" nothing happens - - the curser keeps blinking. How do I find cello? Do I need to create a new template, and how d o I do this?

Please have more patience that 13 minutes.
The Cello most certainly is part of the default instruments from MuseScore. Can you verify the settings in Edit > Preferences > Score for instruments.xml listings?

So sorry if I seemed impatient. I'm not at all . I don't know where the 13 minutes came from.. I've never used musescore for help or the forum before so got confused and probably pressed the wrong controls too many times. Actually Ive been trying to get help for 2 days without results. I'd be willing to wait patiently 3 more DAYS if need be. When you're 89 years old like me, it sometimes takesl longer to learn new stuff
Anyway, I will now proceed to do what you instructed and we'll see what happens.

Hi again jeetee. Still no luck when I try to do what you instruct. I am working from a MuseScore 3 program. Knowing that, can you help me add on the cello part.? I'm a real klutz - - do you i know of any users who live in the West Los Angeles area who might be able to come over and help me?

Can you explain precisely - step by step - what you are pressing, what you expect to see happen, and what happens instead?
It should be as simple as this:
1) File / New to start a new score
2) enter your title etc, and press Next
3) click Choose instruments
4) in the window that appears, type "cello" into the search box
5) in the list of results, double-click either "violoncello" (the full name of the cello) or "violoncellos" (if you're writing for a whole section of them instead of solo

I have a MuseScore 3. What I'm trying to do is to add "cello" to my pisno score. Here's what I'm doing step by step:
I cllick on the small blue MuseScore logo at left of screen and that bring s up the large blue MuseScore logo, followed by a blank score with the word "Title" at the top, then a full page featuring several blank scores, earlier scores of mine and, at top left, a rectangle with a cross on it subtitled "Create new score".. I click on"continue" (not "next") and "enter score information" comes up.
I complete the information ("title," "composer," etc..) and clickk on "continue" and the following info comes up:
"general," "choosse instruments" (in a blue band) and several musical choices come up (not including string insstruments) and I click on "solo" to bring up "piano".
I then click on"key signature," "tempo" etc., which brings up "done.". When I click on"done" my completed
blank piano score comes up.
At no point am I shown a full list of string instruments in order to select "cello", and when I click on "search box" to find cello, nothing comes up.
what amI doing wrong?

As per https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/create-new-score#choose-template
At the template screen, don't choose solo piano, but keep the "choose instruments" template selected. The next screen will then allow you to select from all instruments.

As mentioned, since you want to choose instruments, that's the best thing to click, not solo piano. That's why my step 3) above specifically said to click "Choose Instruments". But, if you've already created a score for solo piano, no problem - while viewing that score, just go to Edit / Instruments and you'll see the same dialog allowing you to choose more instruments to add to your solo piano.

Double click "Choose Instruments", or single click followed by 'Next'.

OK, I went to Edit/Instruments (while viewing my piano score), clicked on "instruments" (with the letter "I" shown). A large blank panel came up on the left with heading "All Instruments" at top left in boldface. At bottom left "Search" is shown in pale gray. When I clicked on "All Instruments" nothing came up. What now?
Thank you for sticking with me; I'm sure we'll get there somehow.

What you're describing is not how the instruments window looks like in the current version (3.6.2); which version are you using (see Help > About)?
Also take a look at the screenshots posted below of how this is supposed to look.

hi jeetee:
The version of MuseScore I'm using is simply MuseScore 3. If the current version is 3.6.2 Maybe that explains why I can,t select a specific string instrument.. Can I automatically upgrade from 3 to 3.6.2 or do I have to purchase 3.6.2 outright.?
I clicked on Help>about but it didn't address my problem
Thank you for pitching in and trying to help

You don't ever have to purchase the desktop notation software; it is always fully free and not for sale.
Just download the latest version from https://musescore.org/en/download and you should be good to go.
In reply to hi jeetee: The version of… by Dongela
There's no MuseScore version that is simply MuseScore 3. Check Help > About for the exact version.

As mentioned, you seem to be using an older version, see Help / About and it will tell you the exact version. Update to the latest before doing anything else.
But to be clear: "All Instruments" is what will display if you previously selected it, or if you are currently doing a search. Check your search box, maybe you started typing something in there accidentally. Click in the search box and delete whatever you started to type, then try typing what you are actually looking for (eg, "cello").

Gosh! A whole 13 minutes with no answer.
What happens if you press "I" on your keyboard? That should open the Edit Instruments dialogue
If that doesn't happen, then tell us what version of MuseScore you are using, what OS, whether the problem happens with other scores, whether you have tried reverting to factory defaults.
And have a little patience until a community member has time and inclination to help.

I'm just guessing here, but...
Press the 'Next' button, if it's there.
In the New Score Wizard...
