Meaning of "Select the duration for the total period".

I was trying to convert the three notes I had already input into a triplet. Selecting them and pressing Ctrl+3 resulted not the thing I wanted. I searched the web and found an answer that says

"For converting existing notes on the staff to triplets, it would seem easiest to select the duration for the total period (quaver), then select the 3 notes (blue box around them). Finally 'Cont + 3'. The 3 notes would then be converted to triplets for a duration of a quarter note."

But I do not understand the "select the duration for the total period (quaver)" part. I would appreciate if someone could explain that part.

The text you quote is from a user requesting whether such a feature might be added in the future. Converting 3/8ths into a 1/4th triplet is not a feature currently present within the software; you'll have to re-enter those notes.

Have selected on the score the note or rest currently in the position where you want the triplet group to start. "Select" means select on the toolbar the note that would normally have a duration equal to the total time for the group of triplets you want to make. When do that, it will give the selected "start here" note or rest that time value (so it can be turned into three triplets of the duration you want).

Then press Ctrl-3. The selected starting note on the score will turn into three triplet symbols. If what you had selected on the score to start was a note, the first triplet will be a triplet note (at that same pitch), the remainder will be triplet rests. If what you had selected on the score was a rest, you will get three triplet rests.

Then use letter keys from the alphabetic keyboard to, in turn, give each of the triplets the desired pitch (this of course will also turn the triplet rests into triplet notes).

If you select three notes on the score, then each of them will be turned into three triplets.

I think this scheme is horrid.
