Roland Drum Kit selection

• Feb 5, 2022 - 04:23

My apologies if this has been covered somewhere but I have not found what I am hoping to learn. I am trying to use MuseScore to drive using MIDI a Roland TD-20 Percussion Module. The hardware is in a place and functional. Within the TD20 I have multiple drum 'kits'. Each kit uses different sounding drums, alternate percussion, etc. I want to have a particular chart use a particular kit but have not found the method to make that happen. I'm presuming there is some kind of initialization that MuseScore needs to send in the MIDI data to set the kit number. Currently, the instant the MIDI data is sent, the TD20 changes to kit #1, regardless of the set I have pre-selected. For example, I want to use kit #12. I start MS playing and the module immediately switches to kit #1. With the data stream playing I can manually change to the kit I desire and get the sounds I want. I need that to happen automatically. I can insert a couple of blank measures to give me time to get the proper set selected, but it seems like I should be able to have MuseScore do the selection itself.
Thanks for any and all help

Still researching this, but I have learned a little bit about what is happening and what I want to have happen. From the MuseScore side I need to learn if it is possible to send specific MIDI initialization commands. I have yet to learn what commands those need to be on the Roland side so I can't say what commands MS needs to send yet. For now I simply hope to learn if MS can send those commands

Not sure how this works with drum kits, but MuseScore does send the program change for the instrument when playing back, so it could be that your Roland reverts to it's default drumset when receiving a drumset program change.
I know that in the mixer you can select between different drum kits, but I think that is does not affect the MIDI out messages (but that's something you can try of course).

There is no functionality within MuseScore to make it send random/configurable MIDI messages on top of the built-in normal instrument logic.
