Move staves closer together.

• Mar 15, 2025 - 20:55

I have no idea why this happened when I moved these measures to the next page. There is too much space between them. Systems on the previous page were fine with the same lyric placement. I tried the layout arrows, and they moved the staves farther apart, but not closer.

Unless, of course, I was using them wrong. No help in the videos, handbook, or Google.

By far the best help you can get is to attach your .mscz file so that we can determine the reason and suggest a solution. A simple image won't do, unless there's an obvious clue (which isn't the case here).

First idea: as you did in the previous system, add a spacer. But not the same one. The one that ends with two hooks "Staff spacer fixed down".

EDIT: The second idea is as much a question as it is an answer! Take a look on the GIF below at what happens after you add a few measures, then create a new system using measure 10, for example. The result is astonishing (in a good way...), but it seems a little unexpected?
Is this a side-effect of the new "System locks" feature, which will require some adjustments? I don't know.

In any case, I don't think the idea of using spacers from the start of the score is a good way. Let the program do its thing, finish inputting, and maybe everything will fall into place "naturally" with system locks and or system breaks?

Wait for the end of the input of the score, or not...?! (I think we're, at least I do (!), still exploring this major new feature).
The last suggestion then: if I take your score (with the measures added and after deleting all the spacers), and go to menu Format / Measures per system, say 3, we get this: 3Sweet Adeline.mscz
What do you think?

The different spacer worked fine. And, it’s less confusing (for me) than fooling with the settings. This is closer to what I’m used to from Finale, where we could simply drag.

Do you think it happened from switching between Page view and Long view?

No, it happened because "Enable vertical justification of staves" evens out the spacing of systems on the page, by adjusting the space between systems and between staves within the settings. Since the second page only has one system (so far), it took the space between the staves up to the default max. of 20.
