Note entry
Musescore 3.6.2, Win 10. When entering notes using mouse (select note location in score and note duration from Note Input Bar, press "N" key to place note). Before I enter the note, a note of the selected duration 18 ledger lines below the staff is entered. in approximately five seconds an additional note 18 ledger lines below the staff is entered. This continues until I either hit "Esc" or "cntrl z". I an able to move the errant note up to the staff using the arrow keys and I am able to enter additional notes at the same location for chords, but I cannot cause the errant note entry to cease. Mouse performs correctly in all other apps and I have checked the mouse driver. Have reinstalled Musescore 3.6.2 but issue persists. Occurs in attached score (End ReDo). In other scores, notes are added at the approx 5 second interval but not 18 leger lines below staff (drums slowed}.

Revert to factory settings corrected but I lost playback (focusrite). Regained playback and the erroneous entries returned,

Failed to mention, erroneous notes also generate sound from instrument. Sound in constantly on, not note duration.

You said "press "N" key to place note". Actually you should left click to place note.

quote from Musescore online help,
Step 2. Enter Note Input mode
To enter Note Input mode, use either of the following options:
• Click on the "N" icon (on the extreme left of the Note Input toolbar).
• Press N on your computer keyboard.
I did try a left click and was unable to place a note so I am unclear about this.
Additionally, when I revert to factory settings, I am able to do note entry normally, however, I have no playback ability. Musescore does not "see" any playback options in Preferences...API, Devide, MIDI Input, MIDI Output have no options in the dropdown windows. In Device Manager all audio appears to be working. I have normal playback in Pro Tools, You Tube, computer sounds, etc.

Seems one of those other programs has probably requested and received exclusive access to your audio hardware. You'll need to figure out how to disable that, probably. But also see https://musescore.org/en/node/96811

Sounds like some device connected to your system is sending MIDI signals. If you aren't planning to use MIDI input, disable that using the toolbar button.

Deleted extraneous MIDI inputs/outputs. Seems to have rectified the issue. Thanks.

I lied. Worked in Musescore for a while. Everything worked as it should (note entry, playback). Closed Musescore, reopened after a bit and note entry issue returned (extra note added about 18 ledger lines below staff, repeating every five seconds or so). Replay is still working correctly.

Your quote from the manual:
"Step 2. Enter Note Input mode

• Click on the "N" icon (on the extreme left of the Note Input toolbar).
• Press N on your computer keyboard."
These are two methods to enter note input mode. Not two sequential events. One or the other. Not both.
You enter notes with the mouse or letters on your keyboard. If you prefer to enter notes with the keyboard, then place the cursor at a blank part of the score. Then you won't see it.

I agree. My issue is the note being entered 18 ledger lines below the staff, then additional extra notes being entered 18 ledger lines below the staff at five second intervals. The first additional super low note is entered after I have selected a note duration but before I can enter the note with the mouse. Then the additional notes continue to appear until I click esc.

Then apparently,. you haven't successfully found which of your other devices is sending the random MIDI info. Unplug them one by one until it goes away, then you'll know, and either turn it off, find the setting to turn that off, or send it in for repair.

So it appears that Musescore and my Presonus FaderPort Classic conflict. When I detach the FaderPort, problems disappear. FaderPort works as intended with ProTools. This problem only recently appeared. I have had the FaderPort connected and in use for more than a year and the issue started in the last two weeks. I am very curious as to any insight you might provide. I could upgrade to a newer iteration of the FaderPort but I hate to spend the money if there is a software fix that might help.

There might be, but obviously you’d need to contact Presonus about problems with their software. It shouldn’t be sending MIDI messages randomly, so either there is a setting you enabled that causes it to do so, or it’s defective. Either way, it’s something they or their own user support forum would be better able to help with.
