Changing noteheads from pitched to unpitched
I've tried following the handbook instructions but can't seem to find the trick. Notice that on the harp part I did change the notehead to an x (several weeks ago but don't recall how) . I would like to do the same for the tambourine, claves and wood block. Original instruments are flutes with brief changes to these percussion instruments. I really don't want to add percussion lines.

See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/noteheads. You want to change the noteheads to "Cross".

Thank you, but I tried those methods. I attempted again, even after rebooting computer and restarting MuseScore -- still no luck in changing to X's. It works in the Harp line but not in the flute and piccolo lines. Any other work around for this problem?

It doesn't "work" there, because you've changed them to percussion instruments. And for a percussion instrument the notehead isn't just a stylistic choice, but actually means to play a different note (midi pitch).
Associating noteheads with pitches is done in the Edit Drumset window to be accessed from the bottom drum notation input bar during note entry.

Thank you. I'll give that a whirl today. Much appreciated.
