Playback menu is grayed out

While editing, the playback panel, along with the midi button, is grayed out. I've tried going to Preferences> I/O and the playback engine and output settings are also greyed out. It was working just fine a few days ago, but now it refuses to play back. I have done a factory reset to no avail.
