Make sure the keyboard is plugged in BEFORE you start Musescore.

Many thanks - I did that. I suspect it’s either the fact my keyboard is 20 years old or I need some sort of driver. I’m not very technical! The cables are correctly connected as I have the right lights showing on the MIDI display with is mid-cable and allegedly removes the need to install any drivers.

Have you checked to see if your keyboard shows up in Edit / Preferences / I/O? If not, this suggests the drivers that allegedly don't need to be installed., actually do. Or, if it's an old-style MID cable, be sure you don't have it backwards - output of the keyboard needs to connect to input of the computer and vice versa.
Then, be sure of course to be in note input mode and have selected the duration of the note you wish to enter before pressing a key to enter that note.
