Place dynamics on any beat, regardless of note length

One of my favorite features in Finale is the ability to place a dynamic anywhere in the measure, regardless of the duration of a note. For example, in a bar containing a whole note - the ability to place a dynamic at beat two in the same measure. I know this can be done using layering, but one of the major drawback of this, besides taking more time, is MusicXML. Importing this into other notation software can create additional work to smooth out the imported music.
