Need for Classical Saxophone soundfont

• Dec 22, 2022 - 02:40

So, the new soundfont in Musescore 4 is a massive improvement for the saxophone family, but I'm still feeling the lack of any classical saxophone options.
The new sax sounds also have some issues with intonation, some of the low notes are splitting up the octave (especially for tenor) and there's no altissimo range (above standard range), despite this being a very common technique.
I also can't help but wish for some options for the saxophone's extended techniques. Though this is likely due to a lack of standardised notation, it limits the options for composers who probably don't know about them in the first place. The most obvious one is slap tounge, though some inclusion of multiphonics would also be useful (though it would also be a massive undertaking).
As far as I'm aware a soundfont/ vts/ plugin ect. for classical saxophone, even at the most basic level, does not exist.
I've had a brief look into making a VST myself, as I have a great at-home mic setup and access to professional recording facilities. Unfortunately, I don't have access the the necessary software, and wouldn't know how to use it if I did. I also only play alto, though I know many other saxophonists who would love to contribute.
I don't know how collaboration works here, but if anyone with the technical know-how is interested in working on this, please let me know! Classical Saxophone is so often forgotten about, for such a beautiful and versatile instrument!
(Really hoping I've posted this in the right place, if not let me know and I'll move it)

Commenting just to "boost" this thread because I have the exact same issue! I've found myself writing more and more for my classical saxophone quartet and now I'm really envious of the superb sounds and playback that the other woodwinds have, while the saxophone seems to have been straight up forgotten about.
