Dynamics position per instrument instead of global

• Jan 27, 2023 - 12:39

I know there have been prior requests on this subject.
I have several scores with voices and instruments and piano. It is a pain having to alter the positions of the dynamics on one stave and not others because of the global preference to have the dynamics Above/Below.
It is surely such a fundamental principle of score writing that, with one or two exceptions, instruments should have dynamics "Below" and voices "Above" and piano "Between".
I can hardly believe it hasn't been sorted. Perhaps I should persevere with MS4 (but has it even been solved there?) but for other reasons I am sticking to MS3 for the time being.

That would be so very helpful as a new feature!

This continues to be a pain.
Is there perhaps a way for me to create a palette entry which allows the placement of a dynamic or hairpin below the stave when the default is above? Or vice versa. Or a shortcut to toggle the placement of a dynamic or hairpin?

"Or a shortcut to toggle the placement of a dynamic or hairpin?"

You can toggle a dynamic or hairpin with the X shortcut... but only after it has been placed in the default position.

FWIW: I typeset a lot of SATB + Organ pieces, and I always set the positioning of dynamics and hairpins to "Above" by default. Then I only have to worry about repositioning those elements for the Organ part.

As mentioned already, it's trivial to select all dynamics for a given staff (right click one, Select / Similar on this staff) then flip them all when you're done. But, you can also set up your own custom palette with the dynamics already flipped, just Ctrl+Shift+drag one back to your palette.

And yes, being able to set defaults like this per staff is a known area for future improvement.
