A trill cannot be applied to an individual part.

See attached score. It seems that a trill can be applied to a staff, but not on one of the parts on the staff.

In bars 6–7, we can see that the trill can be correctly positioned against the part-2, but again, on playback, both parts will trill.

So what do we do about for instance Beethoven's Sonata Op 111, with the wonderful trills at the end of the second movement played over a simple tune underneath, with the same hand ... 🙂

NOTE. I have not yet learned how to search these forum topics, so I can't tell if there is a post on this topic already, so please bear with me if that is so!

Here's an interesting thread that might help you out:

For the first trill you could click on one note only, the F in voice one, and add the trill. Then extend the line to the desired length clicking on the little box and with the right arrow key. That way only one note is affected. Hope that could help a bit.

For me the best way to search the forum is by entering the search term in e.g. Google

That's true, but then I don't get the full length of the trill, i.e., extending over the 4 beats of the F.

In fact, with further experimentation, I find that the single-character version of the trill, "tr", does indeed attached itself to the part. (As in the discussion you referred me to). BUT it doesn't know about tied notes.

In attachment 1, the bottom note (F) of the chord is selected, and then the trill is applied. Result: All notes trill.

Then if I add some Part-2 notes, they trill also. See Att. 2. (I have pushed them up there so they can be heard.)

It appears that whatever is between the two end-points of the trill-line, i.e., underneath the trill-line, will also trill. (Different from the visual length of the trill.)

Now here is a further wrinkle I just discovered. Have a look at Att 4. — The chord trills for four beats, instead of two beats as expected.

Cheers

The usual technique for precise detailing of ornaments is to
1. write them out in full in a hidden voice.
2. add the usual trill notation for display purposes but disable its Play property.
