Problems dragging objects manually(they get 'stuck')

• Feb 8, 2023 - 01:45

I have this issue, I like to place many objects very carefully by hand, often at maximum zoom. However, as I move the objects, they tend to get 'stuck' on the page, unwilling to move without larger mouse movements, and then snap away from where I want them. This makes eg. placing fingerings exactly where I want them very tedious.

I've provided a test score containing instructions. This may seem like a very minor problem, but it at least doubles the amount of time I spend placing objects down and makes it difficult to do things like stack large chord fingerings perfectly horizontally.

Make sure that you do not have "Snap to grid" enabled. Menu path with the element selected:
1. Properties > General > Appearance > uncheck "Snap to grid"
2. Properties > General > Appearance > Offset - use the horizontal or vertical Offset field to move the element by very small increments

Unfortunately, this isn't the case. I mean a much finer 'catching' than the grid behaviour. I may be dragging a mark distances of an eighth of a notehead's width, and when moving at that very small scale, they start getting stuck, and will require more force from the cursor. You know what? Here's a video.

I describe the issue in it. Additionally, manually adjusting each position numerically in the offset menu is simply too slow.

Not sure what you mean about setting the exact same horizontal offer for each fingering to be slow - it's far faster, and more precise, and less fiddly, than attempting to eyeballing it by dragging. The offset is definitely the much simpler / faster / more precise to do that sort of thing.

Also not you can simply use a custom text style and set the default position and then everything is aligned perfectly in your preferred manner right off the bat, no adjustment required in most cases.

Also, if this is a guitar score, why not simply use the guitar fingerings instead of the piano fingerings? These are aligned as you prefer already by default, no customization or manual adjustment required.

You're welcome!

FWIW, though, I do see what you mean about dragging, it seems there is probably code in place to prevent tiny motions from being interpreted as a drag at the start of the operation, so the initial "jump" makes sense, but somehow it should then be disabled so it becomes possible to still drag near the original area. I recommend opening an issue for this on GitHub - https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/issues/new?assignees=&labels=&te…

BTW, another more precise adjustment method is the keybnoard. The cursor keys alone move in precise units of 0.1 sp, or with Ctrl, by 1 sp.
