Playback doesn't work when file has been open for some time

• Apr 29, 2023 - 18:54

Here's the scenario: I'm working on a piece in MuseScore, then I walk away from it for a while. When I come back—sorry, but I can't give a definite amount of time, but it's usually over an hour—the playback doesn't work. I hit play, and the cursor either doesn't move at all, or it moves over the score with no sound. Regardless, it's as if the whole score is muted. Changing the sounds to or from MS Basic have no effect. The only thing I can do is quit MuseScore (which is usually accompanied by a "MuseScore has unexpectedly quit" message). Any ideas on what might be happening, or what can be done to resolve it.

Incidentally, this isn't a one-time issue. It happens every single time I come back to a score after stepping away for a while without quitting MuseScore.

I'm MS 4.0.2 on Mac 13.1.

Same, but different... I opened MS for the first time in a few weeks, and now suddenly the playback isn't working at all. Bummer because we have rehearsal tonight :(((((

Your problem seems different indeed. In order to help, we'd need to know what OS and what version of MsueScore. And have you tried the obvious things like restarting MsueScore or rebooting your computer. And of course, checking that your speakers are turned on.

If you continue to have trouble, see https://musescore.org/en/node/96811 for some ideas. This is an older article that may not fully apply to the current version of MuseScore, but some of it should still be relevant.

Sounds like your OS is perhaps assigning new device id's each time it goes to sleep. I've heard of that happening, but I've never used a system that does this. Perhaps there is some setting in the OS to control behavior on sleep that can prevent that. Could be worth asking on an Apple forum.

I've noticed this occasionally on Windows. Check to make sure you have Exclusive Mode disabled. Sometimes Windows Update will reset this (annoyingly). That usually fixed it for me.
