Hidden staff drastically increases spacing
I am transcribing a set of piano pieces that require a third stave for a few measures at the end of the second movement. Despite enabling the "cutaway" option for the third stave, the hidden staff still consumes a great deal of space throughout the entire score, and can even be selected by clicking in the empty space. If you toggle the visibility of the third stave, the massive change in spacing is easily seen.
OS: Windows 10 Version 2009 or later, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 4.1.0-231921402, revision: 2e3a93a
I have also reproduced this issue on the nightly build.

Try this:
Uncheck cutaway, right click on measure -> Staff/Partproperties -> Hide when empty -> Always

Thank you, that solved the issue!
I don't have an answer. But I do have a question.
I can't help but wonder why the publisher chose to add a third staff there. I can't think of a good reason. I know you are just trying to recreate what you see. But still, this can easily be done on a normal grand staff.

It is a common convention in classical writing from late romantic composers onward, and I have found it useful in my own writing on occasion. Attached is a sample from Ravel, who regularly used three staves. I agree, it's odd in this particular place, but this is an issue I run into on a regular basis.

My thought is to make notation as simple as possible, with nuance.
