Enlarging staves for children?

• Oct 5, 2014 - 02:34

I'd like to be able to increase the size of the staves, notes, braces, i.e., everything, while decreasing the spaces on the sheet music that I want to prepare for my five-year-old son. At this early point in his education he's having some difficulty reading standard-sized sheet music without being forced to slow down considerably.

I've been trying to accomplish this with the Scaling / Space setting of the Mac version of MuseScore, but when I use this setting in an attempt to expand both the vertical and horizontal size of the staves while decreasing the space between them, what happens instead is that although the staves do get pushed vertically toward one another, they basically remain the same size even while the space at the bottom of the page increases. Then, at a certain point, staves start getting abruptly displaced to a second page that's suddenly created. Child-sizing these very short pieces of music shouldn't require more than one page each.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Scaling / Space *does* increase (or decrease) the size of the staves - that's exactly the purpose of this control. Perhaps you didn't increase it enough to notice the difference.

Space *between* staves is controlled in Style / Edit General Style / Page. There are settings for distance between staves within a system, distance betyween the two staves of a piano part, and the distance between systems. But the latter setting can appear to have no effect at first because of the page fill that kicks in to stretch systems out to fill the page. So you won't see the effect of chnges in system distance until you change the system distance enough to change the number of systems that fit on a page. You can disable page fill by setting the threshold to 100% in that same dialog.
