Accurate playback duration for percussion sounds such as choked crash cymbals
This might seem like an obvious workaround, but it took me a long time to reach this conclusion after a lot of internet searching so I'm hoping this will help someone else too. Also, I do mention a product that is available (free) outside of MuseScore (used within MuseScore 4 as VST) so I apologize if this violates the rules of forums or anything.
I've tried for weeks, scouring these forums and other sources online, to find a good way to get a choked drumset cymbal crash that, when played back, actually sounded accurate (shorter sound duration compared to the standard cymbal crash). Every drumset I've tried in MuseScore (3 and 4) don't work (the don't honor the note duration, just the note on and then play the full sound duration regardless of the written note).
After experimenting with other notation software (most of which have the same limitation on percussion sounds), I decided to try and export the MIDI and import it into my actual DAW so I could have more control over the sound durations. I had actually missed the fact that MS4 had introduced VST support (I was hyperfocused on the built in drumsets and missed the VST option in the mixer). I soon realized in my DAW that the HALion Sonic plugin from Steinberg had drumsets that responded to note duration and, after finding out about VST support in MuseScore 4, I can now do choked crash cymbals with no trouble at all by just writing the cymbal parts using an accurate note duration (shorter notes for choke and longer notes for full duration) on a separate hidden instrument track while notating them properly on the main written part.
HALion Sonic 7 makes the playback of the drumset much better and is a great method to do this given the vast range of instruments available in the plugin. Plus, it's FREE from Steinberg's website! https://www.steinberg.net/vst-instruments/halion/sonic/
