Hi, take a look at the handbook:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/playback-controls#other-commands
I thought that only notated stuff got played. If I wanted to hear chords I would add a new stave and put the chords on that. Maybe an organ with whole note chords in each bar.

Can I get these playback options in M3?

Sure, see: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/playback-chord-symbols-nashville-nu…
You should be able to enable chord playback. Just select all chords and enable the Play option in the Inspector.
Change the sound in the mixer (expand the mixer channel for each instrument to see the Chord playback channel).

Update to at least 3.6.2 (the last before the major upgrade to version 4.x) from here https://musescore.org/en/download#older-versions or if possible to 4.1.1 from here https://musescore.org/en/download

Thanks all for your help - I now have the chords sounding.

Thanks Steve. I'm a bit wary of downloading stuff that's not offered by the System Download Manager. When it offers a later version, then I will download it, but it might be a long wait.

It might never happen; 3.2.2 was released in 2019. "System Download Manager" seems to be rather slow to keep up. In the meantime you are stuck with an old version full of bugs that have now been fixed and new features that have been added and running out of date software has its own risks. Of course you are free to operate your system as you please.
