cannot run musescore 3.x
musescore 3.x stopped working
I'm working with musescore 4.x but I wanted to see something in musecore 3.x and it doesn't work
I installed ver.3 and ver.4 in separate folders
any help? (besides reinstalling ver.3)

What do you mean by "does not work"?
Does it not start at all or when you double click on a file it always opens in MuS 4?
MuS 3 can not open files saved with MuS 4 directly, there comes an error message.
And if MuS 4 was installed last, then the operating system uses MuS 4 to open with the double-click.
Just drag a MuS 3 file into the window of MuS 3.
As explained, MS4 has become the default application to open files with a suffix .mscz.
In Windows 10, you can also get around this by right-click on the filename of your MS3 score, then:
Open with > Choose another app > More apps > scroll down to select MuseScore 3 > click OK

Kill all MuseScore processes in task manager then retry

Try restarting your computer.
Or open the task manager and delete any musescore process that is still present.
This happens to me sometimes too.

Go to Control Panel / Programs and Features, find Musescore 3 with the right mouse button and select Repair.
The names may not be exactly the same in Win 10 because I have Win 7 and translated from the German names. You will still find them.

why on earth does it happen?

Who knows?
Sometimes an installation of other programs overwrites shared dll files with older ones, for example.
But since there is a repair function, it must happen occasionally with other programs.
