Yes, possible in MS3 and MS4. For MS4 the steps are these:
1. Select the Expression Text.
2. In the properties panel, click the More... button
3. In the Frame section, select the middle option (rectangular frame).
4. Change both the frame's Border colour and its Fill colour to white.
The Expression text will now be more legible because the white colour has overlaid the barline:
