Leraning voltas
I am trying to learn how to use voltas. In the example I have provided (greatly reduced for analysis purposes), the first four measures constitute a chorus. The chorus is to play through, with the verse following, four times, and then when the chorus plays through the fifth and final time, it is to jump to the ending shown in the last two measures.
The Repeat List for the first volta I have set to “1,2,3,4”. The Repeat List for the final volta is “5”. The documentation says the “repeat counter” has to be set correctly (without explaining how this is figured). I assume “repeat counter” is what is referred to as “Play count”, which I found in the Measures Properties box in another score I was working on, since I am didn’t find anything specifically labelled “repeat counter” there. However, for some reason this particular score doesn’t have “Play count” in the Measures Properties dialogue box.
When I tell the program to play this score, it plays though once all the way to the repeat dots, then it plays through once again the same, after which the (whatever-you-call-the-blue-line-that-shows-where-it-is-playing) continues through the last two measures, but they do not actually play. Can someone explain how these voltas are supposed to be set up?

Voltas only work at the end of a repeat section and not in the middle.

I have replaced the first volta (Prima volta) with a Secunda volta, open. I think this makes it conform to what you have stated, right?
Your repeat lists are correct.
"Play count" is only a property of the measure that contains the end repeat bar line. In your score, measure 6 says 2, it should be 5.
I'm not sure what order you want to achieve for the last pass. Do you want to jump directly from measure 2 to the 5th ending (V1) or do you also want to play measures 5 and 6 after measure 2 and then the 5th ending (V2)?
Compare the attached files.
(I did it with MuS 3.6.2).

Other possibility:
If V1 fulfills your intention, but the verses are long and the volta would then extend over half the sheet of music, then the use of coda jumps may be more suitable.
V3 works like V1, but has no volta, instead D.C. al Coda, To Coda for the jump to the final ending.

That sounds more reasonable. I'll check into codas. Thanks.

Okay. I found "Play count" in the measure with the end repeat bar line and set the value to 5, and now it does what I want it to do. Thank you so much. Just for clarification, though, is that then the same thing that the documentation refers to as the "repeat counter"? And I don't know why it should be set to 5. That measure repeats 4 times. Can you explain how one calculates the Play count/repeat counter?

Pls. give a link where "repeat counter" is used ...
> And I don't know why it should be set to 5. That measure repeats 4 times
... but the section is played 5 times. Therefore it should not be called "Repeat" but "Play" counter.
Volta repeats can be simple or complex. See the example in https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/measure-properties
