Replacement of Instrument doesn't update the Key Signature

• Dec 25, 2023 - 12:01

Just want to check if this behaviour is intended by design or simply just a bug.

Let's say I have a transposing instrument in the main score, say Alto Saxophone(Eb). I open the part and check that the key is correct. I go back to the main score and change the instrument ("Replace Instrument") to a different transposing instrument of a different key, say Tenor Saxophone(Bb). When I go back to the part, the key is not updated but stays at what it was with my first instrument.

It worked for me. Both doing change instrument a few measures in or in the first measure. When I did the first measure the name of the part stayed as the original name. But in both cases the key changed.

Probably I was doing something different. Let me list out the steps for what I did:
1. Create a new document with Alto Saxophone. I pick G Major key (Concert Pitch) for the piece. Since Alto Saxophone is a Eb instrument, a G Major key piece will be written/displayed as E Major.
2. I then open the "Alto Saxophone" part and check that it is showing E Major which is correct.
3. I go back to the main score tab. I open the Instrument tab. I click on the cog button next to Alto Saxophone and then click on the "Replace instrument" button.
4. I select Tenor Saxophone, which is an Bb instrument.
5. Main score is now displaying the score with new key A Major, which is correct.
6. I click on the Part tab, which is now called "Tenor Saxophone".
7. In this part, it is still showing E Major key in the signature, but I expect it to change to A Major.

My MuseScore is 4.2. I am running WIndows 10.

OK, when I do it that way I get your results. I suppose that shouldn't happen.
My question is why would you do that particular change? Chances are that with without some alterations, one can't play the other part. And while you are at it, change the key. Did you decide to do this before or after there were notes in the part? I'm just trying to learn stuff, here.

I actually do this kind of actions quite a lot.

Let's say I have already got a piece prepared and ready on my computer. Whenever there is a rehearsal/performance, I would just print the piece out beforehand (in the form of different parts). Ideally, the piece can be reused multiple times for different events, but there are always changes in participants. For that, I may have to change one instrument to another substituting instrument (because different participants play different instruments). Therefore, I have to replace the instruments in different parts on MuseScore.

I hope that makes sense. Please also let me know if there are better alternatives to achieve what I am trying to do here.

In the meantime you might try what I did at first.
Open the part in question. Select the first measure. Open the Text properties and select Instrument change. Select the new instrument. Name changes in the score but not at the top of the instrument part.
