Drumline Auto-Moving to New Beats
Hello. I am trying to write a drumline as in the first image, with a regular quarter note on beats 2 and 4. However, when I try entering this into MuseScore 4, the note automatically moves to beats 2.5 and 4.5, as shown in the second image, combining with the incorrect X-shaped note above. Hence, I am unable to put the note where I want, for some reason. How can I resolve this problem?
(Sorry, I am a beginner composer who doesn't know the correct terminology to refer to notes on a drumline staff yet.)
Thanks.

I don't know of any reason why MuseScore would automatically moves these notes to beats 2.5 and 4.5.
Try this to enter the notes:
- Select the existing note at the beat (note with the x)
- Press N to start note input mode
- Press 4 to ensure the correct note length is set
- Press Shift+A (assuming it is a snare hit you want to add)
The shift is important to instruct MuseScore to add the note to the existing note.
To fix the current notation you can also try this:
- Select the note with regular head at beat 2.5
- Press N to start note input mode
- Press Shift + Left Arrow
Repeat the same for the note at beat 4.5
Hmm...thinking about that...perhaps that is what is happening when you enter the notes, maybe you keep pressing the Shift after the has been entered and use the rigth arrow key to move to the next note for entering the note.

Aaaahh, thanks! I see the problem now. I was imputing the snare first as quarter notes, then putting the X-notes on top as eighth notes. I think MuseScore is trying to divide up the quarter notes into eighth notes so that they will fit together, but is only keeping the offbeat from the original quarter note for some reason. This makes it look like it is shifting the note.
It seems the solution is to simply be careful to enter notes in the correct order and to be careful that the note values are consistent.
Thank you.

Sounds a bit odd, as usually when you add notes with the Shift key pressed, it will ignore which ever note value was selected and just add a note with the same value as the existing note on top.
Anyway as long as you know how to get it correct, it okay.
