How can I customize a peculiar triplet

• Mar 10, 2024 - 07:53

Hello, I want to write a triplet in a time of five 16th notes like this. But tuplet customization won't let me do it, no matter I set a 5:3 ratio or 3:5.

Confusing, indeed! I thought I understood how the custom tuplets work, but obviously not. The instructions say,

In note input mode, select A note duration equaling the total duration of the tuplet; or, if in normal mode, select A note or rest of the desired overall duration. [emphasis added]

I'm not aware of any way to have a single note that equals the length of five 16th notes. So that would seem (???) to be the first problem. But I wasn't able to make a custom tuplet with anything but powers of two as the second number of the ratio. I get error messages along the lines of ...

Cannot create tuplet with ratio of 3/5 for duration 1/4

If you can't make a tuplet with a denominator other than a power of two, then the dialog shouldn't let you select such values. However, I've certainly seen tuplets like that one you want. shrug

Anyway, if it's helpful, I was able to create a monstrosity that PLAYS the rhythm, if it doesn't look good: enter the space as five 16th notes. Separately, set each to be a triplet (Ctrl+3). Then tie them together into three blocks of five.

... which might be what you had already done with your measure of 5/16?

I simply create a customary 5/16 measure and divided it in to a tuplet. It is confusing that when they allow this work-around they won’t allow it to be done normally. I think it should be designed as subdividing a chosen length of time.
Your work-around is more counterintuitive😂

That's a good way to do it. Split measures to make a whole measure of the correct duration, make the whole measure rest into a tuplet, and then rejoin the measures. Not much else you can do when you want x:5. Even x:7 is possible the normal way because you can use a double-dotted note, but there's no single note duration that's 5 beats, so the normal method doesn't work.
