Playback
When I change the play count to make a repeat go 3 times (which doesn't work anyway), the playback loses piano and instrument sounds. ( I have 3 tracks, voice, piano and Vla.) The 3 were playing. Suddenly I notice I can't edit the M and S in the mixer. The voice is the only one with M and S visible in the unselected mode. The other tracks, the M has become invisible(can;t be edited). The S shows as normal, but as the track has no sound anyway, selecting makes no difference, other than muting the voice track. == no sound at all.

Sounds like you have the voice staff selected, which causes only the voice staff to playback.
Press ESC or click an element to "unselect" and get all to playback.
Please attach the score to advise on the play count issue and to confirm the playback works as expected.

Thanks for your reply.
All the tracks were audible when I opened the file. As soon as I edit the play count in bar properties, the playback changes. I can only hear the voice. I've attached a screen shot of the mixer and the voice is not on solo. Also I'm trying to get it to play the 3rd verse in the audio, but no luck.

In the Properties tab, change the "Repeat list" values of your voltas to 1,2 and 3 respectively. You currently have them set to 1 and 2.

As mentioned in the other post, you need to update the repeat list values to get the desired playback.
Related to the playback behaviour. When you select the bar to set the play count, the bar remains selected and therefore the playback will only play the voice. Hit ESC to undo the selection and then you can play with all instruments.

I can't seem to edit the volta text. I click on it and choose edit element but nothing happens. No window appears. I can't find the inspector at all, for anything. The info says it appears by default. Not on my computer (I've got a new one Macbook Air 2023 Sonoma) I could see it on my old computer (Macbook pro 2015) The Fn F8 button doesn't work - nothing happens - except it turns on my Music app.
Sorry. I've used the program for years - and loved it - and have found everything I needed.

The inspector has been replaced by the properties panel which you find on the left.

I wondering if the playback dropout you're experiencing is related to

If so, it's marked as fixed in the pending 4.3.1 update.
BTW, on repeats in MS 4.3 I frequently encounter audio dropouts.
