"Open Recent" prevents access to file menu

• Jul 16, 2024 - 15:18

Under the file menu there is a "recent open" option.

The list for "recent open" appears to be unlimited. When you open the file menu and move you mouse over the list of options (new, open, open recent, close, etc...) the "recent open" option brings up the list of "most recent files". But if that list is long (On my setup, that's about 36 files) it covers over the file menu options (new, open, open recent, close, etc...) and you're not able to access them. This prevents the user from accessing the file menu options using a mouse.

To get around this, I've have been open the file menu and then using a hot key sequence (ex. CTL-S for "save"). But hot keys are not available for all options.

Perhaps the easiest solution is to limit the "open recent" list size or place "open recent" at the bottom of the file menu list.

CLEAR OPTION:
I saw this online...

The Scores section of the Home tab (which opens by default when MS4 is started) shows a "New & recent" section that provides a button to start a new score, or to select a score that was recently open in the program. This list is also available from the main menu under File --> Open Recent. When selecting Open Recent, the bottom of the menu provides an option to "Clear recent files".

.... but my list does not have a clear option.

BTW my version is...
OS: Windows 10 Version 2009 or later, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore Studio version (64-bit): 4.3.2-241630831, revision: 22b46f2

"When selecting Open Recent, the bottom of the menu provides an option to "Clear recent files""
.... but my list does not have a clear option

You really have to scroll right down to the very end of the "Recent files" list- and maybe it's the last line (only half-visible)?

On my (Windows 10) laptop, the "Clear recent files" option can never be seen 100% - only the tops of the letters are visible!

Hi Bob,
I did this and it clear the list, but it does not result in the list being to the right of the file list,
In clearing the list however, it resets other things. This works in a clutch to clear the list, but it does not solve the issue.

Thanks

Can you post a screen capture of what you're seeing ? The recent list should be on the side of the menu and not covering it, what you're describing is strange.

"Can you post a screen capture of what you're seeing ?"

I can't reproduce what has definitely happened to me even quite recently, which is that the Recent Files list has become too long to allow display of the Clear recent files option. [EDIT: I always use the DownArrow key to scroll down the Recent Files list, and...] the problem was that the list did not scroll right to the end in response to the DownArrow key and that there was no "more" arrowhead visible to access the remainder of the list.

But while trying to reproduce this fault today, I can clearly see the "more" arrowhead at the foot of the list. It does not respond to use of the DownArrow key, but it does respond to a mouse-over action. Sloppy programming, IMHO.

What this case probably needs is a setting in Edit > Preferences > Advanced to limit the number of entries in the Recent Files list? That's often seen in other software products.

See attached

This screen shot has a short "open recent" list and I now see that the clear option, but I now want to clarify that that is not the problem. The problem is the "open recent" list covers the file menu list. even a short list (as shown) does not allow me to see or select "close" and other items from the file menu list.

OK... I think I isolated this to my particular setup.
I have a dual screen system in extended mode. Laptop monitor plus External monitor.

When Musescore is in full screen on the laptop screen... it works ok. (file 7a)
When Musescore is in full screen on the external display... the recent open list hides the file menu options. (file 7b)

When Musescore is NOT in full screen on the external display.... it works ok. (file 7c)

I hope this helps
