Cannot import PDF File to MuseScore

• Jul 17, 2024 - 16:57

Hello,

I was wondering what steps to take to import a PDF into MuseScore, and then how to change the notes from round notes to shape notes. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

First, for future reference, best practice is to limit a post to a single question. If you include multiple questions in a single post, some of them are likely to be overlooked.

Next, File / Import PDF. :-) Be aware that the software that interprets a PDF is likely to give you errors. Other applications reportedly give better results. (And I'm sure that others will point you at them.) But if your PDF is clean, high-contrast, and doesn't have too many extraneous markings (sadly, like lyrics), then the web-based tool available at that link may do the job for you.

Finally, shape notes are REALLY easy.

1) Select the notes you want to change from standard notation to shape notes.
2) Go to the Properties tab at upper left.
3) Under Note / Head, click on Show more. Then, immediately under the Show less, you'll see Notehead scheme.
4) Click the Notehead scheme dropdown and you'll see four different shape note patterns: "4-shape (Walker)", "7-shape (Aikin)", "7-shape (Funk)", and "7-shape (Walker)".

While I've sung from shape notes, I don't know enough about them (or about what you need) to know which to recommend.

Thank you very much for your reply, TheHutch. I have successfully converted and opened the sheet music in the desktop app. But for the life of me I cannot find a "Note/Head" section under "Properties", nor under "Project Properties" in "Files." Could you perhaps share a screenshot of where to find this option?

Well, It seems I didn't select notes, that why I didn't find any note head options

If you look at your picture, in addition to the first 2 notes, you have also selected the Tempo.

Try this...
Presumably you wish to change more than those 2 notes to shape notes; so right click a single note then, in the resulting menu, click Select→Similar.

Because the Properties panel shows layout and playback properties of the selected objects, you want to be strictly focused on the notes. Next, follow @TheHutch's steps posted above.

Alternatively, looking at your picture, you can click on 'Note' (under Notation) and then "drill down" to find the Notehead scheme. (Use the path: Note > Head > Show more > Notehead scheme)
