Barline issues in full score

In creating full scores, I have run into a perplexing issue with the barline after the first measure of many pages. Later barlines on the same page are not affected. The issue is that the barline that is supposed to run vertically through all instruments in the section (i.e., winds, brass, strings)--and does so in most of the score--somehow reverts to one barline for each instrument, not extending through the section. I don't know what prompts this. It is easily remedied, however. I just click on a note or rest anywhere on the page, use the arrows to move it up and immediately back down, and the errant barline magically and properly extends. But after returning to the score to make small unrelated corrections, I have to examine every page for this barline problem and, if present, correct it page by page. Is there a setting or an easy fix I'm missing?
