Assuming you want quarter note triplets, you can click on a half rest and click 'ctrl-3'. (windows).

Yes, but you asked for six notes. Select the whole measure, Add >Tuplets >Sextuplet creates six quarter-notes. Select a half-note and Add >Tuplets >Triplet adds three notes. The important thing here is that the menu option does work, Select the total duration and then the number of notes to fill that duration.
