Can't open files from previous version of Muse 4

• Nov 26, 2024 - 20:09

My subject line states the problem. Needless to say, I'm very sorry I updated. Please don't tell me I've lost all the files I had previously.

Your subject line states a problem, but what sort of problem?

Can you not see the scores you created with the version 3? They should be exactly where you left them. Each major version of musescore has its own sets of folders. In windows the default location for scores when using version 4 is Documents/Musescore4/Scores. When using version 3 it is Documents/Musescore3/Scores.

Can you see the scores but not open them? If so, how are you trying to open them? What happens when you try? If that is the case, please attach an example score here so that someone can see if there is anything "special" about the types of scores you are dealing with?

Can you run Musescore without opening a score?

Do the scores open but then show an error? If so, what error?

Also which exact version of Musescore 4 are you using - look in Help>About Musescore Studio?
And which operating system?

Do you have any "extras" in your system? Extra screens, sound cards, midi devices etc.?

In short, please held us to help you.

I have both version 3 and the latest iteration of version 4 (version 4.4.3). Version 3 is an entity in itself, and I can open everything I made with that version. In Version 4, I CANNOT open anything I made with version 4 prior to this latest iteration that I just downloaded an hour ago. (I'm using Windows 10 on a PC. No extras.)

This Is calling itself Muse Score Studio 4 (without the Hub). Is that different than just Muse Score 4? I didn't see anything called simply Muse Score 4. I use the program primarily to write out parts f or church musicians. (As an aside: I use the program primarily for writing out parts for church musicians. I'm not interested in putting anything online.)

I can see the score titles but not open them. I'm getting a message that says that the current version 4 cannot read the score. Then it tells me the file cannot be opened and to make sure that the program has permission to read the file.

It does work. Thank you.
But none of my files work as they were originally saved. I can't understand why. I don't see anything wrong with the original file names. I guess I'll try renaming all my files from the previous version of MuseScore 4. (I don't have time for that at the moment.)

@rxbach1... You wrote:

That's good...
So my attachment "1-How Deep the Father's Love for Us-#351-cello.mscz" opens after you downloaded it from this forum.
The only reason I used a slightly different file name was to distinguish our 2 files from each other.
Many times, in the forum, people post and re-post problematic examples back-and-forth using the exact same name and it gets difficult to follow which score they are talking about.
So, as an experiment, try this:
See if you can open your attachment "How Deep the Father's Love for Us-#351-cello.mscz" from this forum.
There should be nothing wrong with the file name and it might open for you after only being posted to, and downloaded from, this forum.
(You should not have to re-name all your files.)

Yes, it opened from this forum.

But I still can't open any of my other files that were made with the previous iteration of version 4. When I'm in MuseScore 4.4.3 and try to open a previous file, a message tells me it can't open and to make sure I have permission to open the file -- as I've said previously.

When I'm in MuseScore 4.4.3 and click on "open other" at the right bottom of the file list and the file list comes up in This computer/documents/MuseScore4/scores, when I click on a file there I get a message that says, "You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the file owner or administrator to obtain permission." I AM the owner/administrator of the program. I don't get this.

Where are your files stored? Are they in the default MuseScore 4 scores folder? Perhaps permissions for wherever earlier have changed. Perhaps a security update.
You were able to open the above score from from your downloads folder, or where?

When you have a "totally unrelated" issue, post it in a new thread. Posting such an issue in an unrelated thread will often mean that it gets lost and never responded to.

This page of the Handbook (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/pickup-and-non-metered-measures) may help. The "Working with non-metered music" subsection of this Handbook page (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/mensural-notation-and-mensurstrich) may help. If neither resolves your issue, make a new thread.
