Splitting/joining measures for individual staves and not every staff in the score

• Dec 22, 2024 - 00:41

Hello everyone!!

I am not entirely sure how to word this properly, so please bear with me. Also, I have not made any forum posts in the past, so my formatting may not be proper!! Please, excuse me.

Essentially, I want to split and/or join measures in a specific staff, or multiple specific staves, but unfortunately this is not possible as any split or join affects every staff in the score, which is unwanted. The reason I would like to do this is to make a cut-out score where I can have a staff begin or end mid-system, without interrupting the note duration of any notes located on a different staff, like in the attachment named 2 (in which I attempted to illustrate the aforementioned example). I will attach another example, too.

I know this is quite literally the definition for a cut-out score, but I felt it was necessary to explain it in full detail either way. I apologize if it was redundant.

Please don't hesitate to ask for further clarification if it was not clear enough!! Thank you all for your help. :)

Thank you for the quick reply!

I have tried them all and, unfortunately, none of them work for my case. Image capture was removed and has yet to be re-implemented (Hopefully doesn't take long!), and the other 2 options are essentially how I am doing things right now, only difference being that I hide empty measures by selecting the "cutaway score" option under the staff properties menu.

All of these options work exactly as intended, which is great! But my issue comes when I want to split a measure without splitting the same measure for the other instruments in my score. Say, my project, a string quartet, is in 4/4 and I want to split measure #4 in 2 before the second rest, but only for the violin 1, effectively leaving measure #4 as a 3/4 for the violin 1 and 4/4 for the violin 2, viola and cello, so when I make my score cutaway it only hides the newly created 1/4 measure and thus effectively making the 3/4 measure start mid-measure in reference to measure #4 of the other instruments. As of right now, any splits or joins made to a measure in any staff affect every other instrument as well.

I know contemporary composers are probably a minority and features such as this one may not be a priority, but I would love if MuseScore could hone and add some features to help contemporary composers such as myself. This is not the place for suggestions, and non-traditional notation is not easy to implement, but I still wanted to mention this.

Again, thank you very much for your response!!
