pizz. changes entire score and does not go back to arco

I have the first 6 measures of my viola piece as pizz. but at measure 7, the arco command does not change the playback to bowing. If I remove the pizz., the playback is bowed but if I add the pizz command, the entire piece is played pizzicato. I have removed the pizz a few times, added it back, and done the same with the arco command with the same results each time.
