Opening another score in 4.4 opens another whole musescore session rather than just a tab
I'm used to older versions of musescore (3 and earlier), and in those if I open several files at once then they just appear as different tabs in the same session with just 1 musescore icon in my dock . Now that I have finally updated to the new version 4.4 then even if I open an existing file when I'm already in musescore it creates another icon in my dock rather than just having a tab. Same if I open multiple files at once. It makes it really tricky to navigate between them. Is there a way around this?

This is the way it works now. I'd be surprised if tabs ever comes back. Sorry.
MusScore opens another instance of the program, as you have found out. Whether or not multiple icons appear depends upon the way your operating system handles this. I use ubuntu and only one icon appears. Does your operating system allow you a choice?
MuseScore 4 did away with tabs entirely. It sucks, but it is what it is.
Personally, I don't think tabs would work nearly as well in MS4 anyways, due to how resource-intensive the program (and especially MuseSounds) can be. If I had multiple of my scores open all in the same MS4 window, I think the program would probably straight up crash! I know it's done worse for less before lmao
