Bass drum whole rest while snare plays
I'm trying to have the bass drum rest for a full measure (bar 2) while the snare drum plays and I want this indicated by a regular 4 beat (whole) rest like the one in the snare drum line in bar 3. The music is in 6/8 which I think is the source of the problem. There seems to be only 2 options: no rest in the bass line, or a dotted half rest. When I try inputting a whole rest, it becomes a dotted half rest. Is there a way around this?

One way would be to enter the notes and don't worry about the whole rests yet. To show you how it will work. range select some of the measures you just entered. Go to Tools>Voices>Exchange voice 1 + 2. Then exchange them again. Your whole rest should be there.
In bar 2, only enter the snare which will (normally) be in voice 1. Select the measure and use Tools > Voices > Exchange voice 1-2. This will put a measure rest in voice 1.
Exchange the voices again to put the snare back into voice 1, and the rest will be in the bass drum voice 2.
