Rhythmic triangle/horseshoe notation

• Mar 12, 2025 - 06:00

Hi all,

Is there any way to add rhythmic markings above a score? I'm writing a piece with changing meters and very little rehearsal time, and it would be helpful to the musicians to see the grouping of beats in alignment with the score and parts. See attached excerpt of Tehillim by Steve Reich—this notation would be ideal, just with horseshoes instead of straight lines.

Is there a method to do this in MuseScore that doesn't involve importing these symbols as images or manually moving them to be in alignment?

Ctrl+Shift+T (or Add / Text / System Text from the menu) and type a letter. (It's just a placeholder, so it doesn't matter what letter you type.) Now, double-click on the text field and open the Properties tab (upper left). Toward the bottom, click to Insert special characters. Replace the placeholder letter with an appropriate special character from the list.

For the vertical bar, you might use one of the barlines available in Musical symbols / Barlines.

For a horseshoe symbol, I'm not sure what you want but I found something like a horseshoe in Musical symbols / Conductor symbols (called "Beat 2, simple time"), Musical symbols / Harp techniques (called "Slide with Suppleness"), Musical symbols / Keyboard techniques ("Pedal Heel 1" or "Pedal Heel 2"), or Musical symbols / String techniques ("Down bow"),

If you don't like those horseshoe symbols, you could try one of these triangles: Musical symbols / Chord symbols, Musical symbols / Conductor symbols, or Musical symbols / Vocal techniques.

I didn't even try to look at the Unicode symbols list. I'm sure that there are vertical bars, "horseshoe"s, and triangles there you could use.

You'll have to attach these symbols to each note that needs one, but you should be able to copy/paste from one to the next.
