MuseScore Studio crashes when I add French Horn to a custom part score

• Mar 25, 2025 - 19:34

I'm making a Brass Quintet, and since I am not done, I want to keep the main score in concert key so I don't have to deal with transposing instruments. However, I am also starting to make part scores and a total score, which should not be in concert key, so I made a custom part in the "parts" tab. Whenever I add the french horn specifically, by pressing the closed eye in "layout", even when there are no other instruments on the score already, MuseScore crashes.

In Parts, click on the three dots "..." in front of this "Custom part", then on Reset.
If this doesn't solve the problem, please attach the score (.mscz file) so we can find its origin.

The problem lies at the very beginning of the French Horn staff. There's a current G clef, and another 8va bassa. What did you do, or want to do, here? In any case, it seems that deleting this second 8va clef solves the problem.

EDIT: You'll also notice that this 2nd clef (French Horn staff) is in the main score - 2nd image below. Here again, I don't know what your intentions were (either you added it to the main score or the part, but why)
