Widening line

• Mar 29, 2025 - 21:47

Does anybody know how to notate the line as seen in the png(s) below? I don't know what to call it, but essentially, it starts off tiny, then it gradually gets thicker as the line continues, and then finally it shrinks into nothing (I hope that what I said makes sense). If anybody has any idea, try and demonstrate in the best way you can. Please and thank you!

I've never seen such a line in MuseScore. Of more interest, however, is what is the line supposed to DO? Based on the image, I'm guessing that instrument is supposed to get louder over those measures and then softer. If that's all it is, just use hairpins.

I've seen notation like this used in graphic (or semi-graphic?) scores from the latter 20th c., in works by Penderecki and Ligeti, for instance--"sound-mass" composers. Although looking at the images of this score, it doesn't appear to be that style--out of context, and without explanation, it's hard to know what's intended.

I don't think this can be reproduced in MuseScore.
