Mute button sometimes gets stuck (grayed out)

In the mixer, why does the mute button sometimes get stuck?

In this screenshot, I cannot change the Piano staff's mute status.

Ah... then, just now, it re-enabled, after I switched to a different workspace (xubuntu) and switched back.

Weird.
