Two voices, same note: should output a single MIDI On signal

• Mar 6, 2015 - 23:27

I've searched different keywords but I couldn't find a topic about this that I know exists.
Maybe it's fixed in the most recent night builds, but anyway:
in 2.0 Beta (a925ae0) two voices playing the same note at the same time send two MIDI noteOn signals. This is VERY noticeable when using a VST with Jack (I guess with soundfonts too?): the note volume results higher.

The situation of two voices playing the same note is not uncommon and it's correct notation.

I know this is about playback, but it's very annoying.

The work-around is obvious, just mute one of the two notes.

I disagree. A unison should be a unison period. ie it should play two notes albeit they are the same.

There are a multitude of instances where a unison should be played in this way ranging from closed score choral parts through woodwind and brass orchestral parts where 2 instruments share a staff to guitar scores where the playing of 2 notes of the same pitch is a frequent and signature technique.

Indeed, but sometimes MIDI doens't handle this so well - you necessarily get a realistic impression of two instruments / voices playing at once, but instead you get a kind of "phase" effect. Also, there is a bug if the notes have different durations - the sounds cuts off with the shorter (see #12971: Same note in different voices and lengths plays only the length of the shortest note). So currently, muting one of the notes is an often-necessary workaround. Would be nice eventually to sort this out a bit better.
