You can set a shortcut for play via Edit > Preferences > Shortcuts
The trouble is finding a good shortcut for default. Space is already taken for rests. Ctrl+Space was the default shortcut for some prereleases this development cycle but it turns out this shortcut conflict with the operating system for transliterated languages such as Japanese and Chinese.
F5 is a common shortcut for starting something (for many programming IDE's this is used to "Run"), but I don't think the function keys work on Mac (since they are used by the operating system).
Another option is P which is each to remember for English speakers but not as convenient to press as some other keyboard buttons.
Since this issue does not relate to data loss or crashes and has a simple workaround (set your own shortcut), I am setting the priority as normal.

Definitely agreed.

Thanks, setting a shortcut for the Play action in Edit -> Preference works for me.
F5 is ok for Mac as far as I know. It's "autocompletion" shortcut on XCode by default. Run is Alt + Cmd + R.
Play button is now Spacebar (but can be reconfigured if preferred) - rests are 0.
