The control for number of measures per line is missing MusicScore 2.0

• Mar 29, 2015 - 11:50

I have just updated to MuseScore 2.0.0 and I cannot fix the number of measures in the system as I did with the old 1.3 version.
When I open MuseScore: Edit Style I do not have the choice “Fixed Number of measures/system” and “Fixed measure width” that I see on the online manual.
I only have the first 4 choices: System bracket thickness, System bracket distance, Brace thickness, Brace distance.
I wrote and kindly Thomas told me that It has moved in the menu to: Edit > Tools, but the effect on the score is different.
I have found the command in in the menu to: Edit > Tools, but is a forced line interruption and has a differnt effect on the layout.
With the old command you force a fixed number of measures in any line, the difference with the new one is that if I defined 4 measures in any line the old Muse Score 1.3 was able to force 4 measures even if it had to increase the "density" of the notes.
With the actual command, if the "density" of notes is high, you can get lines of 3 measures followed by a line of one measure.
I enclose 2 images to explain the problem.

Here is the score.
Anyway lasconic has confirmed that the command for fixed number of measures per system is missing in MuseScore 2.0
The change is described here http://musescore.org/en/node/51666
It seems that the option of MuseScore 1.3 is replaced by Edit → Tools → Add/Remove Line Breaks. Then use Layout > Page settings > Scale, but I have not found any “scale setting” in the Page Settings.

The option is called "Staff space" (in US English, anyhow), and it is within an area of the dialog called "Scaling", right below "Page Size".

But as I mentioned in my previous response, that is only one way to do it. You can also simply reduce stretch - thus keeping things the same size, but squeezing notes closer together. MuseScore shouldn't try to make this decision for you, and that is why both 1.3 and 2.0 leave it to you to decide *which* change to make if you want to fit more measures on a line than fit given your current settings.

We never said anything about reduce the number of pages. If reducing the staff size does not do what you want, simply reduce stretch. This is, again, *exactly* as it was in 1.3, except instead of the option to set the maximum number of measures per line, now it's a more flexible facility in Edit / Tools that can work on just a selection, to allow for pickups or other systems where you might want things different.

But once again, the option 1.3 did *not* put more measures per line than would be allowed by your settings. Did you try with the example I posted? It shows quite clearly that the option in 1.3 was only a *maximum* number of measures per line, just as with the new facility in 2.0. If MuseScore could not fit the number of measures you asked for, it would not try. you had to explicitly reduce stretch or scaling in 1.3, and that's exactly the same in 2.0.

Actually 1.3 never had a way if forcing a particular number of measures per line. It only had a way of enforcing a *maximum*. That is, you might specify you wanted four, but if only three fit on some line, that's all you'd get. Which would then throw off other lines, and there was no way to control the effect. That's why it was scrapped in favor of the far more flexible tool provided now. Not stretching or changing line size - that's totally different indeed. I mean the new add/remove line breaks facility, which does what the old facility did but much better.

1.3 would not let you fit more measures per system than are allowed by your current staff size and measure spacing settings. If you saw a case where it looked like that was happening, it was either a bug, or else the measures actually would have fit anyhow. Try it with a score containing nothing but 32 measures of eighth notes, and ask MuseScore 1.3 to fit 6 measures per system. See attached score.

In either version, if you wish to fit more measures than are allowed by your current staff size and spacing settings, you need change those settings, either globally for the whole score, or in the case of measure spacing, changing this locally for just the necessary meausures. For example, select all, press "{" until the measures fit. Again, this was necessary in 1.3 as well.

Thank you, now I have found the way to set the number of misures per line, it is the sum of two options:
- Edit / Tools / Add/Remove Line Breaks
- Page settings / Width Spaces Staff
With ther first you set the number of measures per line that you want, then adjusting the width of the paces staff you can force MuseScore to respect that number.

If by manually, you mean the handful of clicks it takes to run Edit / Tools / Add/Remove Line Breaks, then yes, but you also had to "manually" set the old option in 1.3, and that actually took more clicks. So it's less work now, and works better and more flexibly as well. It really is an improvement all around.

Version 1.3 had the ability to set a fixed number of measures per system, which was very nice. I just discovered the "Edit: Tools: Add/Remove Line Breaks...: Break Lines every XX measures" feature which allows me to accomplish the same thing. Thanks!
