convert sequence of eighth notes into triplet

In working with music recognition software (e.g. PhotoScore or SmartScore) I find that these programs often fail to recognize triplets (but some times still manage to wind up with the right number of beats per measure; or they may alter the time signature for the erroneously parsed measure). To fix the results when imported into MuseScore, It would be helpful to be able to convert a sequence of 3 eighth notes into a triplet of eighths, for example. It would of course be the user's responsibility to decide what to do with the extra eighth note rest that would be created in the process. Perhaps this could be accomplished by a plug-in?
