Are there any marching percussion instruments?

• Apr 14, 2010 - 05:56

I'm new on here, and haven't downloaded yet. I was just wondering if MuseScore has any marching percussion (marching snare, tenors, bass drums, and cymbals).

Help is much appreciated. Thanks.

The files for marching percussion were added to existing instrument files and soundfont. Those files and an installation tutorial can be found at http://sites.google.com/site/mhsbulldogdrumline/composition/

I have recieved many compliments and have been working with others I have met through musescore to help refine this work, but it is by no means complete. If you have any trouble with it, or suggestions for improvement, or would like to contribute to its development, please contact us through the forums.

Sincerely,

Mike S.

I can't seem to get your marching files to work on my Mac. When I download the sound files it disables the playback. Plus, I do not even see the marching instruments in the palette. I see that you use a PC so you may not be able to assist me, but are there any Mac users out there who have gotten it to work?

Thanks,
Leslie

Okay so download the two files that you should already have (the instrumentwithDL.xml and TimGM6withDL.sf2)

Open up Finder.

Go to applications/ Musescore. Right click on the application and choose "Show package contents"

Go to Contents/ Resources/ Sound. Paste the .sf2 file here.

Go to contents/ Resources/ Templates. Paste the .xml file here.

Close both finder windows.

Now open up Musescore.

Go to Preferences/ General.

Under Paths where it says "instrument list", click the little folder icon next to it.

Navigate to the .xml file you just moved and select it. Click open. Hit apply. Close Preferences window.

Now click on display/ synthesizer.
Click the folder icon beside soundfont and navigate to the .sf2 file you downloaded and moved. select it and hit open.

Restart Musescore.

Now select your instruments from the marching percussion list and you're good to go.

It is also what shows up when you first create a score (eg, File / New) and you click "Choose Instruments". Or, make it easier on yourself and just choose one of the appropriate templates, which already has right instruments chosen for you.

But in any case, no this post is no longer valid. Much as changed in the intervening four years. You no longer need to load special files to use marching instruments in MuseScore, and in deed the ones created for older versions of MuseScore don't work any more.
