Only way I know to get the playback effect would be to set the note itself to slient, then add an addition invisible note of the correct playback pitch in another voice or staff. I'd probably do it in another staff (and make the whole staff invisible when I was done, via the Instruments dialog). That was it wouldn't interfere with the layout at all, plus I could choose an appropriate sound.
