MuseSCore Learning Process

• Aug 1, 2010 - 22:50

Hello MuseScore friends,

I am a very novice music student, although being kind of old. I have been using MuseScore (excellent software, I really like it) as a music learning tool. Generally, I get a music sheet (mostly piano/violin/cello music), enter the notes one at a time to MuseScore, and then play it on my computer or transfer the corresponding midi file to my Yamaha Clavinova to play. I think it is a good and enjoyable hobby.

Also, in order to better understand what various musical notations and how they should be played, I examine the midi file through an editor with piano roll display capability. I am finding that several music notations in MuseScore don't show any consequence in the midi file. For example:

o Dynamics seem to be the same for both hands (piano). My midi file editor gives a "velocity" for each note that I think means loudness.

o Pedal doesn't seem to be doing anything. I expected to hold each note during its respective period.

o Crescendo/Diminuendo don't seem to have any effect either, whether by writing the text or by using hairpins. The "velocity" of the notes don't seem to be changing

o Appoggiatura/Acciaccatura are played all right, but seems to be inconsistent with what I read in literature (example: http://www.piano-play-it.com/piano-ornament.html)

o Trills are not played at all. I expected them to be played like http://www.piano-play-it.com/trill.html.

o Slurs seem not affect the midi file either

I did go through the forum and searched for answers. No luck, there are too much information in the forum.

I will be very thankful if you help me with this. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong. Also please let me know if you want more detailed information.

Sincerely

Farhad Nozari

I assume you use MuseScore 0.9.6.1 right ?

  1. Dynamics : By default a dynamic has effect on the whole part. So for a piano, on both hands indeed. You can chanhge this behaviour by right cliking a dynamic -> Midi properties->Apply to and change to ie staff.
  2. Crescendo and decrescendo are not implemented in MuseScore 0.9.6.1 but are in the work for next version. In MuseScore 0.9.6.1 you can simulate a crescendo effect by right clicking on each note->note properties and change velocity type to custom and velocity value to the right value.
See this issue to follow the development : #4905: Crescendo/decrescendo playback
  3. For appoggiatura, it a known bug, see : #4879: In playback, appoggiaturas shift following note rather than subtracting from it
  4. Trill playback is not implemented
  5. Slur playback is not implemented. That's a difficult one since a slur is different for flute and piano. See this discussion

lasconic,

Thank you very much for your response. It cleared the issues for me and taught me suitable work around. I am using MuseScore 0.9.6.1 and hoping that these features and others that I haven't learned yet be implemented in future releases.

It would be very nice if the Manual (Handbook) indicates that these features are not implemented.

Also, am I correct to assume that pedal is not implemented yet?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Farhad,

I noticed today that if you right-click inside a staff, you have the option of viewing the staff in piano roll. Choose "Pianoroll Editor..." from the popup menu (be careful not to accidentally right-click a note or some other object, or you'll get a different context menu instead).

Best regards
