Marching Snare Input

• Jul 21, 2015 - 18:55

First, I search for a while to see if this was asked and answered and did not find anything.

I just downloaded and installed the most recent version a couple days ago. I had still been using an older version. The marching snare staff line defaults to only one line, and I'm ok with that. However, when I input notes, it puts them well below the line. The older version I was using did not do that. It put the note right on the line. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks,

Scott

I don't know anything about the marching percussion really, but it seems to me the default marching snare definition is inconsistent. It seems either it should be using different lines for the notes (only -1, 0, and 1) or it should be using a five-line staff. No?

The Marching Percussion instrument definitions was copied from Michael Schorsch's XML for 1.3

I suspect it could do with revisiting because somewhere between 2.0 Beta 1 and the release version it stopped displaying correctly.

Personally I don't know enough about Marching Percussion practice to undertake this.

Are you sure it worked differently in Beta 1? The relevant change, I think, happened long before that: we switched from numbering the one line of a one-line staff as "4" (?) to numbering it as "0". In other words, a one-line staff is basically the top line of a five line staff, not the middle line. Drumset definitions were updated for this long ago, but I guess not the marching definitions. See for example #19197: Non-5-line drumset stave lines incorrectly positioned.

If these definitions were sinmply missed in the update - or the update happened before the amrching definitions were incorporated - the fix is to simply subtract 4 from the "line" for each of the marching instruments notes.

But I think maybe actually, the Snare Drum should be a 5-line staff, as otherwise there would be ledger lines. I guess the original for 1.3 did use a 1-line staff and had ledger lines, though? The Cymbals could definitely use an adjustment from line 4 to line 0.

Well, maybe I will submit a PR to change this, then. Would appreciate input from people who use this: what do you think makes the most sense for marching snare? 1-line or 5-line? If 1-line, were you happy with the way it looked in 1.3, with ledger lines occasionally?

I am looking at also fixing some pecularities of 2-line staves as per https://musescore.org/en/node/70346#comment-321781. Again, some insight into what people who actually use 2-line staves expect would be useful.

Hi. Sorry it took me so long to get back to this thread. I like the look of five line staff just because it looks "normal" me. But even though when you start a new score the snare and cymbal are only one line, you can change it to however many lines you want by right clicking the staff, choosing "Staff Properties" and changing the number of lines. When I change the number of lines for the snare to 5, it inputs the notes on the middle line, which is fine with me.
